It is unfortunate that Peter Christian's Tavern closed it's doors February 15th 2010. It was a wonderful place. At this point we are out of stock of their Mustard. We are hoping with some miracle the recipe isn't gone forever. Yankees don't quit easy, stay tuned.
Yankee Marketplace is always on the lookout for exceptional products that stand above the crowd, those Yankee gems, as we call them. Peter Christian’s Tavern Original Sweet, Dark and Spicey Mustard Sauce is one of those products that defy description. We were excited when Russell McDonough, proprietor of Peter Christian’s Tavern, met with us one sleepy afternoon, and surprised us with samples of his famous mustard. Needless to say, we were amazed at his story and his original mustard sauce. After the meeting, we traveled to a local pub with some of the samples and ordered up some hot bread so we could get the full effect. It was absolutely delicious - we even shared some with our waitress! Why so good? Here’s the story... Peter Christian’s Tavern has been serving friends and weary travelers alike for over 30 years. Their mustard contains no preservatives or salt and does not require refrigeration after opening. Every batch of original mustard sauce is made at the tavern by a slow cooking process. Each jar is then filled and capped by hand to insure quality and consistency of the product. If you have ever enjoyed their mustard sauce, you know it is the one mustard that’s a must in your kitchen. Proprietor Russell McDonough loves his original mustard sauce so much that he is unwilling to compromise any detail that will affect the final results. In fact, his own staff makes every batch themselves in a giant kettle in his kitchen, and they personally fill every jar. He will not use any ingredients that do not meet his stringent requirements, and when he speaks of his mustard sauce, it’s as if he were talking about a member of his own family! Needless to say, were impressed with his commitment to quality and consistency. The sauce is thick, dark and spicey. It has a sweet flavor with a spicy aftertaste, a perfect harmony of all the ingredients. It’s great for dipping pretzels, or for spicing up your favorite sandwich. It requires no refrigeration and never goes bad due to its fermented ingredients. Russell will be sharing some of his favorite recipes with us so we can experience the full potential of his sauce. This sauce is also great for marinating and glazing. |
